Every carrier with a USDOT number has to update its MCS-150 every 24 months, even if nothing about the business changed. The good news: your filing month never moves, and you can file it yourself for free.
What the MCS-150 is
The MCS-150 is the form that keeps your USDOT registration current: your company details, operation type, vehicle count and mileage. FMCSA calls this the biennial update because it comes due every two years.
How your USDOT number sets your month
Your schedule comes from the last two digits of your USDOT number:
- The last digit sets the month: 1 is January, 2 is February, and so on up to 9 for September. A 0 means October.
- The next-to-last digit sets the year: if it's odd, you file in odd-numbered years; if it's even, you file in even-numbered years.
- Example: USDOT number ending in 37 → the 7 means July, the 3 is odd, so you file every July of odd years (2027, 2029...).
Can I file it myself?
Yes. Filing the MCS-150 yourself is free. You never need to pay a third party to stay compliant. If you'd rather hand it off, we prepare and file it for $89, and it's included for Solo Desk and Small Fleet Desk members.
FMCSA moved to Motus
Legacy FMCSA systems moved to Motus on May 14, 2026. Carriers now designate a service provider, and the provider must accept. When we file for you, we use provider designation or work with you on the line. We never hold your passwords.
Watch out for look-alike letters
Official-looking MCS-150 and UCR letters demanding payment are common. Many come from private companies, not the government. Before you pay anyone, send us a photo of the letter and we'll tell you what it is, free.
Quick answers
Rather hand it off? We publish our prices, and we'll always tell you when a filing is free to do yourself.
